The art department is holding its semiannual Pottery Sale fundraiser from May 7 to 11. The event is held throughout the week in the Art Building, ending with a silent auction.

Students, staff and professors create various pieces of pottery and donate them for the fundraiser every semester.

Anne Van Blaricom, gratis employee, said, “Students make artwork for this fundraiser to support the art department.”

Van Blaricom helps students and watches over the studio. She said, “All of the students or professors volunteer and donate their artwork, which is a real big help.”

Ceramics professor Mary Law said there is usually jewelry and paintings displayed at the event, but this semester, it is likely there will only be pottery and ceramics on sale.

Law said the silent auction should pique interest and generate bids by the end of the week. Friday (May 11 this year) is usually the sale’s busiest day.

“People who are interested can bid during the whole week. There will be several pieces of art that will be displayed and people can place their bids on a piece of paper that will be in front of each piece,” Law said. “Usually on Fridays, it gets really interesting and there is a frenzy of bidders.”

Van Blaricom wants people to come to the event to see what students are doing in the Art Building, which sits on the hill toward the back side of the campus.

“I just want it to feel like an open campus, that is open to the public, so they can see what we do and also have an opportunity to be a part of it,” she said.

Cindy Klaetke has been in ceramics classes for four semesters and is creating a replica of an ancient Greek Mycenaean cup.

“Every semester I help set up the event,” liberal arts and humanities major Klaetke said. “I usually donate a piece every semester.”

Emily Cooper, art major, is donating a variety of bowls and vases.

“I love being in ceramics,” she said. “I put a lot of work into my pieces and I really recommend people to come because it is a great event.”
