The 54th Annual Scholarship Awards ceremony was held on Friday at the Knox Center, celebrating Contra Costa College students who have been awarded scholarships during this college year.
The night started with a welcome from CCC Foundation Board President Martin McNair, who congratulated all of the recipients as they took their seats.
During the introduction, McNair mentioned that there are two major events which fund the Foundation scholarships. One is a golf tournament.
"We gather many of our friends and associates who pay a lot of money to come play golf and that money goes into the scholarship fund," McNair said.
Introducing the recipients was Vicki Ferguson, interim dean of student services, and Academic Senate President Wayne Organ.
Seventy-seven scholarship recipients were listed in the event's program.
Winners were announced along with the names of the scholarships they won and a statement of their educational and career goals.
Early childhood education major Rima Goode, who will be transferring to Cal State-East Bay to pursue a career in speech therapy, won two scholarships.
Goode was the recipient of the Associated Student Union Achievement Scholarship and the Bert Coffey Scholarship. The Bert Coffey Scholarship awards Goode with $1,000 that goes to help fund her transfer to a four year university.
She found the scholarships through the CCC financial aid and scholarships website.
"Apply as early and to as many as possible. Brush up on your writing. Most scholarships need letters of recommendation so get to know staff early in the semester to ask for them," Goode said.
Business administration major Patrick Yarnold, recipient of the Stephen Schaefer Scholarship, also found his scholarship through the CCC website.
The scholarship awards Yarnold with $500 for four semesters once he transfers.
He encourages students to apply and use the resources the college offers. "Just do it. You never know which one you'll qualify for," Yarnold said.
Nursing major Shanda Williams, winner of the Kennedy-King Memorial Scholarship, addressed the assembly.
In the address she said, "As a winner of the Kennedy-King Scholarship, it was an extremely proud moment in my life.
"Not only did it make going to a private school and pay my tuition more feasible, but it really told me how much hard work and dedication I've put in." Williams will be transferring to Samuel Merritt University where she will pursue her career in nursing. She hopes to one day open her own non-profit health clinic in an underserved area.
After more scholarship awards, McNair presented the Benefactor of the Year award to the Antonio and Trinidad Carrico Charitable Trust.
The trust funded the CCC Foundation with more than $1 million, McNair said. Since deceased, Antonio and Trinidad Carrico were the owners of the Hacienda Restaurant in Richmond.
Their children were CCC students. They were recognized at the event for their contribution to the Foundation.
Ian Baylon, brother of Cristina Quintero, Alpha Gamma Sigma Service Award Scholarship recipient, came to the event to support his sister.
"I felt really proud of my sister, I know she deserved it. She worked really hard for (the scholarship)," Baylon said.
