Providing service to students is nothing new for Letta Greene.
The student services and instructional support coordinator has been helping students at Contra Costa and Los Medanos colleges since 1994 and she continues to do so this semester.
Working in the Financial Aid Office, Greene is often seen helping a student by answering questions concerning their financial aid and which scholarships to apply for.
"I like working with people," Greene said. "My plan is to provide students the necessities that they need here to transition in life."
Born and raised in Richmond in the Parchester Village, Greene graduated from Richmond High School in 1987.
After her graduation, Greene, 43, enrolled at UC Riverside as a business major.
After graduating from UC Riverside in 1991, she found a job in San Francisco working for Pacific Bell in the marketing department as a health care consultant for the company.
"I would run through monthly and yearly health care expenditures to get businesses to lower their costs on services," Greene said. "I also had to give breakdowns to people on ways to get serviced by (Pacific Bell)."
Having a strong need to give back to her local community, Greene was hired by CCC in 1994 to serve as the EOPS student services and instructional support coordinator.
"CCC felt like a natural environment and it was a good option to work at," Greene said. "I could have gone to LMC instead but CCC was a better fit."
Greene built valuable relationships with staffers working in the Humanities Building at CCC, where the student services offices were located before the current Student Service Center opened in 2008.
"I have known Letta since 1999 when I first started working at CCC," EOPS student services and instructional support coordinator Ken Reynolds said. "She was the person that helped get me started here."
Senior administrative assistant Shondra West said Greene also played an important role in getting West adjusted to CCC when she first started working for the college in 1999.
"Letta was very supportive and taught me the ropes," West said. "We worked well together as a team and we felt comfortable sending students to each other."
While Greene managed solid relationships on campus, she was, however, moved to Los Medanos College in 2001 to serve the same position for the CalWORKs program.
From 2001-10, Greene worked at LMC until she was again transferred to work at the district's Brentwood Center as a student services liaison, counseling assistant and party planner extraordinaire.
"It was devastating when Letta left the campus," West said. "She was very energetic and a funny person to be around."
Reynolds agreed.
"Everyone in the department was like a family. We threw birthday parties for each other and it was always important to recognize one another," Reynolds said.
Since returning to CCC in July, the campus has welcomed Greene back with open arms.
"I am so happy that she came back to the college," West said. "She has matured into a professional since she first started working here."
Outside of CCC, Greene is currently married to her husband of 18 years and is the mother of 10 children. She enjoys knocking down walls, climbing mountains and running along the California coast.
Greene said that because she has 10 kids, she is more patient while working her job.
