Losing streak ends at seven
Late game homerun responisible for victory
A late game home run led to the baseball team's 7-4 win at Hartnell College (4-7 overall) on Saturday in Salinas. The Comets' win snapped its seven-game losing streak.
During his last at bat in the top of the ninth inning outfielder Kory Oda hit a two-run home run to give CCC (1-7 overall) the 7-4 lead. With that home run he hit for the cycle for the contest.
"It was the top of the ninth and all he needed for a cycle (a single, double, triple and homer) was a home run," pitcher Prejon Bynum said. "(He hit the home run) at the least likely of times too."
Assistant coach Ivory Jones said that Oda was the most valuable player of the game and he came through in the clutch.
Oda also hit a double knocking in two RBIs, giving the Comets a 5-4 lead in the sixth.
"(My teammates) got on base and I made the clutch hit," Oda said.
The Comets have been struggling to score runs thus far this season.
CCC was shut out in its first two games because of a lack of hitting.
"Our pitching has been excellent all season but we haven't had any run support," Comet baseball coach Marvin Webb said. "The big thing is getting our offense going.
"It feels great to get our first win," Webb said. "We've been so close (to victory) every game. We've been improving every week and I think we have a little bit more confidence now."
Bynum said in prior games they would play great, but one bad inning would cause them to lose the contest.
"We've been hungry for our first win so hopefully this sparks a streak," Bynum said. "We have to keep the momentum going and keep playing as a family."
The Comets will begin conference play against Yuba College at home on Thursday at 2 p.m.
