Missed free throws doomed the women's basketball team Friday against Solano Community College (14-10 overall, 11-3 in the Bay Valley Conference) losing 55-54 at home. This was the Comets (15-13 overall, 8-6 BVC) final game of the season and the loss snapped their four-game winning streak.
The win gave SCC its fifth consecutive win against the Comets. Women's basketball coach Paul DeBolt said, even though Contra Costa College did not make the playoffs, he would have loved to end the season on a five-game winning streak.
"We must have spent 20 minutes (practicing) free throws (the day before the game)," DeBolt said. "It's frustrating for everyone. (Missed free throws) cost us the game for sure."
The Comets went 0-10 from the free throw line in the first half, but still held a 26-22 halftime lead over the Falcons. CCC shot 14-31 overall on free throws attempts. Missed free throws have been a problem the entire season.
The Comets' final possession ended with a bad pass resulting in a turnover with 2.2 seconds left in the game.
"We had a mental lapse (late in the game)," DeBolt said. "They went on a nice (scoring) run and got defensive stops against us."
Throughout the game CCC built leads only to watch them disappear as SCC battled back.
"We were rushing our shots and not being patient," freshman forward Jeannay Washington said.
In the second half the women's basketball squad was held to only six field goals - the rest of its points came from free throw attempts.
When the Falcons were making their come back, DeBolt used the full-court press to try to create points off of turnovers. His plan did not work.
"I think we should have changed our offense a little more when they started to figure us out," sophomore guard Allyson Roberts said. "We were panicking when they came back."
Roberts had a huge first half, scoring 10 points and making a buzzer-beating 3-point shot to extend the CCC lead.
The leading scorer for the Comets was Marquisha Jelinek who scored 18 points.
The Comets had the lead throughout the game and had chances in the final seconds to win, but could not finish.
"When you are ahead 90 percent of the game and lose its frustrating," DeBolt said. "You have to give (SCC) credit. They hung in there."
