A lack of help from the bench cost the men's basketball team to blow a 18-point lead to College of Marin (12-6 overall, 6-1 in the Bay Valley Conference), but held on to win the game 72-66 in the Gymnasium on Jan. 16.

The Comets (9-10 overall, 3-4 in the BVC) defense started to fall apart after resting its starters in the second half.

Contra Costa College came out strong offensively by sinking three 3-pointers in the first half, and were also able to create turnovers on the defense.

The Comets made eight 3-pointers throughout the first half, which added to its 18-point lead.

"We played a good defense, and knocked down their two point shots," Comet sophomore guard Davion Mize said.

In the second half CCC maintained their lead against the Mariners, so men's basketball coach Miguel Johnson decided to rest his starters.

Johnson was relying on his bench to close out the game for the Comets, but due to the lack of experienced players on the court  the Comet's defense began to fall apart.

This led the Mariners to capitalize on their defense by closing in on the Comets lead.

"If we get a chance to rest our starters when there is a lead, that's in our favor, Johnson said about putting in his reserves. "When we decided to put our second string players in that's when our defense started to (fall apart)."

Once the Mariners cut CCC's lead to nine points, Johnson decided to put his starters back into the game.

Comet guards Mize and Armain Outing dominated the rest of the game and were able to hold on to their lead to win the game.

Mize finished the game with 21 points and Outing finished with 11 points.

The Comets went 9-22 on 3-point attempts, but only made one 3-pointer in the second half.

The men's basketball team lost 96-93 at Merritt College on Saturday.

CCC's next game is at home against Solano Community College at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 in the Gymnasium.
