With hopes of the playoffs early in the season, the men’s soccer team was not able to meet its goals and missed a chance on making it into the postseason.
Despite having an overall record of 10-7-4, the team’s Bay Valley Conference record was not as good as coach Rudy Zeller wanted it to be. The Comets finished in third place in the BVC with a 6-4-2 record, totaling 20 points in the conference with Yuba College (12-5-2 overall, 8-2-2 in the BVC) taking the championship in first with 26 points and College of Marin (8-8-4 overall, 8-3-1 in the BVC) coming in second with 25 points.
The Comets’ defense was strong this year. With goalkeeper Jesse Hernandez and defender Tao Sabella, both captains, commanding the defense, the team shut out its opponents eight times and allowed only 25 goals in 21 games.
The offense started off the season slow in non-conference matches, playing four games where the Comets did not score a goal. That was able to change in time for conference play.
In conference play, the Comets scored 31 goals in the 12 games played, including five games with four goals or more.
Forward Diego Orellana was the top goal contributor for the Comets, netting 18 goals in the season including two hat tricks.
