An aggressive defensive and offensive display by the men’s soccer team led Contra Costa College to its first win of the 2012 season over Yuba College at home on Friday.
The Comets (1-8 overall, 1-2 in the Bay Valley Conference) shut down the 49ers (4-4-3 overall, 1-1-2 in the BVC) by holding them scoreless, winning 3-0.
“We gave it everything we had. Breaks went our way and every single player had a solid game,” Comet coach Rudy Zeller said. “Continuing forward we’re going to play hard, work hard and keep building off our new-found chemistry.”
With the win, CCC was able to snap an eight-game losing streak.
The Comets will go on the road to face Napa Valley College (3-3-3 overall, 2-0-2 in the BVC) Thursday at 4 p.m.
Despite the defensive stalemate in the first half, CCC began to turn up its offensive intensity in the second half.
The Comets did this when midfielder Marcos Solis scored a goal off an assist from fellow Comet Jaime Ruiz at the 49 minute mark of the game.
“We played with grit and passion. We never gave up,” Solis said. “We’re a hardworking team and we’re finally starting to find our chemistry.”
Solis was able to score his second goal of the game at the 69 minute mark after a pass from Comet forward Jessie Cook, which allowed him to capitalize on the scoring opportunity.
Three minutes later, Cook was able to score a goal of his own, putting the game out of reach for Yuba.
The 49ers were unable to create scoring opportunities on offense, causing the Comets to have control of the ball for the majority of the second half.
CCC’s ball possession created fatigue and frustration for the 49er defense.
The Comets took a total of 32 shots compared to Yuba’s 23
“I feel the whole team did really well,” Comet defender Jesus Chavez said. “We (wanted) to keep the defense strong so we could play the game with no regrets.”
