PLEASANT HILL — The baseball team (0-5 overall) had a rough day on the road as Diablo Valley College (4-3 overall) won 1-7 on Feb. 13.
The Comets starting pitcher Christian Suarez had difficulty on the mound, allowing four runs, eight hits, five earned runs, one walk and one strike out during his 4 2/3 innings of play. “I have to start batters off with strike outs.” Suarez said. “I have to change something and stop throwing so many balls.”
CCC baseball coach Marvin Webb said in regard to taking Suarez out of the game, “Suarez was not getting the job done on the mound and was walking batters.”
Vikings leadoff hitter, center fielder Davis Strong hit a single and then stole second in the first inning. Two batters later Vikings first baseman Nick Gavello walked on a 3-0 count. From there Vikings left fielder Athan Koutsoubinas hit an RBI to bring in Strong for a score.
The next batter Viking shortstop Anthony Taliaferro hit a RBI single making the score 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Vikings third baseman A.J. Welsh hit an RBI double to bring in Taliaferro making the score 3-0.
Vikings starting pitcher and right-hander Johnny York was unstoppable going eight innings with 10 strike outs, two walks, three hits, and allowing only one run. “I made sure every pitch counted.” York said.
In the top of the fifth inning the Comets designated hitter Lamar Smith hit a leadoff single and stole a base. First baseman Byron Buckley hit a RBI with a runner on base making the score 3-1. York retired 10 out of 12 batters after that. “I take everything serious.” York said postgame.
The Comet bullpen also struggled, when relief pitcher Joe Castaneda walked Vikings pinch hitter Giberti Shaylor with the bases loaded making the score 4-1. One batter later, Castaneda walked Viking center fielder Strong to make it a 5-1 ball game.
In the sixth inning DVC scored more two runs. First by left fielder Koutsoubinas hitting a sacrifice fly to bring sophomore and catcher Luke Van Holten, then shortstop Taliaferro hit a RBI single to bring in first baseman Gavello making it 7-1.
The Vikings bullpen only allowed one hit in the ninth inning when Comet right fielder Tyrone Bowie hit a single, then pinch hitter Cameron Jones struck out ending the game 7-1.
